Debbie
Persaud, 12, of Area 'G' De William, West Coast Demerara, 181/2 kilometers or
111/2 miles west of Vreed-en-Hoop and three kilometers or two miles east of
where the accident occurred, died on the spot after she was reportedly struck
down on the Zeelugt Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, as she was attempting to
cross the road.
According
to reports, about 11:00 am Persaud was attempting to cross the road when
motorcar HB 459 struck her, dragging her some 150 feet away from the point of
impact.
She died
immediately apparently from extensive head and other injuries to the body.
After the
vehicle came to a standstill, residents prevented the driver from fleeing the
scene.
Many
relatives, including the child's mother and grandmother, turned up. They were
very emotional as they tried to revive their loved one with Limacol as she lay
lifeless on the road.
The driver
of the ill-fated motorcar was at loss for words as he looked at the lifeless
child on the roadway surrounded by her grieving family.
The police
were summoned and the driver and his vehicle were taken to Lenora Police
Station.
Male
suspect sought in Corentyne woman's death
The
police are looking for a male suspect who they think may have information
regarding the death of Nandkumarie Latchanna, 44, of Number 54 Village,
Corentyne, Berbice, whose body was found on Thursday morning in her front yard
with marks of violence.
The police
yesterday said that the male suspect is a friend of the dead woman who was seen
in front of her yard shortly after the body was found.
The man
called 'Bico' of Crabwood Creek, Berbice, was a regular visitor to the home and
is known, up to late yesterday the police that he has reportedly gone into
hiding.
Latchanna
was found dead in her front yard with what appeared to be marks of violence on
the head.
Her
daughters made the discovery about 6:00 am on Thursday morning after the woman
was not found in the kitchen.
She is an
early riser who usually prepare meals for some contract workers who are working
in the area.
Relatives
are of the opinion that she was murdered by a known assailant that morning while
she was cooking.
A post mortem was conducted yesterday.
